Daniel Lu wins again

James Yu closer to the podium

Absolute Racing and Daniel Lu lead Teams and Drivers’ championship

Absolute Racing’s Daniel Lu extended his lead in the Formula Masters Series on Sunday to 19 points with his third victory of the season at Sepang.

On Saturday’s races, Lu took two commanding victories, while teammate Arvin Esmaeili finished impressively third and second.

Sunday morning’s Race 3 saw a three car battle for the win, Starting from 4th, Lu quickly moved  up to third but he couldn’t go any further in the classification as the 6-lap race action was shorten by a safety car period. With two cars off the circuit in dangerous positions, the safety car was deployed right after the lap one. The race restarted with two laps to go but Lu, who smartly kept his head down throughout the fight, had no time to emulate Saturday’s glory.

Lu’s podium was complimented by a 4th place for James Yu, who had been well in the fight for the first place outside the podium throughout the race.

Cabrera drove flawlessly to a 6th place finish, whilst Esmaeili had a rough start to the day. The Swedish driver spun at T4 after riding a kerb too high and hit the barrier. Fortunately his car was repairable for the last race of the weekend.

The drivers fastest lap times set the grid for Race 4. Daniel Lu managed to claim this pole-position with a 2:06.808.

The fourth and final race of the weekend saw Lu showing why he may be the man to beat this season. With the start passing without incident for the leaders, Lu was able to pull away from the rest of the field. The 15-year-old from Shanghai led the race from start to finish, setting the fastest lap on the way.

Ever-improving Yu came home again in 4th position, only 0.3 seconds from the podium.

The lady luck was not in favour of Esmaeili this Sunday. The Singaporean-born racer dived on the inside of an opponent at T2, the pair made contact, resulting in Esmaeili losing some valuable time. Eventually he finished in 8th position. Teammate Cabrera finished in 10th.

Absolute Racing is clearly leading the Teams’ Championship Standings with 41 points from the second-placed Team. Lu left Sepang with a lead of 19 points in the Drivers’ championship.

Absolute Racing Team Director was full of praise: “We started the season in a good way. Daniel won 3 out 4 races, Arvind went to the podium twice, James was very close to get a podium place and Manuel showed signs of improvement over the weekend. A big thanks goes to the entire team that had to work extremely hard to prepare the cars over the winter. But we won’t have a lot of time to celebrate because the season continues at Sepang in only one month from now, and we want to keep the momentum going.”

Formula Masters Series stays in Malaysia for the next three rounds of the championship. Sepang plays host to the second meeting of 2017, May 5/6.
