SONOMA, Calif. (Sept. 22, 2016) – In his Pirelli World Challenge debut, this weekend, South Korean driver Andrew Kim stood on the GTA podium, while teammate Adderly Fong (Hong Kong) came away from Sonoma Raceway with a top-10 finish in the front-running GT class.
It was a last-minute entry for Kim’s No. 78 Continental GT3 and Bentley Motorsport in the UK pulled out all the stops to get the car prepared and shipped to arrive on Thursday of race week. After qualifying in fourth on the competitive GTA grid, Kim made his North American racing debut at the 12-turn, 2.285-mile road course in Northern California on Saturday and finished in second place in Sunday’s race.
Hoping to continue his run of podiums, teammate Adderly Fong qualified the No. 88 Bentley Continental GT3 seventh for Saturday’s event and finished ninth. On Sunday he was hit on the first lap and needed to pit for repairs, but when he returned to the circuit he set lap times on par with the leaders.
Only one round remains of the Pirelli World Challenge. Bentley Team Absolute will take on Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Sunday, Oct. 9, at 4:30pm ET. The race will be streamed live on world-challenge.com.
“Pirelli World Challenge is very different from what I’ve done in Asia. The tires are different, the tracks are different, the drivers are different, so for me there was a lot to learn. However, I loved Sonoma Raceway. It was really fun to drive, but it was very demanding physically. There was no place to rest! I’d certainly love to come back and do some more racing in America.”
“It was a difficult weekend, but we still managed to get inside the points. The mixed conditions made finding the right set-up difficult and this affected our tire wear in the race. Still, we’re off to Laguna Seca, now, which I’m really excited about. Driving the Continental GT3 at such an iconic track will be an incredible experience.”
