- Team StarChase returns to the podium
- Third win in a row in the Porsche Dealer Trophy
- Podium finish in the “Invitational Race”
SHANGHAI, 24th of July – The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia held their fourth event of the season at the Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia last weekend. Absolute Racing serviced teams showed flashes of brilliance as Team StarChase’s Philip Hamprecht made a double visit to the podium on a scorching hot weekend.
The weekend started well for the team when Hamprecht set the second fastest time in Qualifying, just 0.058 off, whilst team-mates Tanart Sathienthirakul and Yuan Bo slotted into fifth and sixth places respectively on the starting grid on Saturday.
The German rookie got off to a good start in race one and took the lead of the race. The first corner was pretty hectic and the safety-car was called in. Tanart and Yuan Bo were involved in a dramatic crash, which has seen both men retire from the race. The Chinese racer received a 10-position grid penalty for the second race for causing the accident.
On restart, Hamprecht was able to hold the first position but as the race played out he started to struggle with the tires, losing the first place with three laps to go. Eventually Hamprecht finished second on the podium, winning for the third time in a row the Porsche Dealer Trophy for Team StarChase.
“I had a good start, and I attacked immediately. I led all the way but I think I pushed too much in the beginning, destroying my tires. I recovered a bit in the end but those seven laps ruined my chances of winning. Chris did a very good race too, and congratulations to him for the win. I’m happy with P2 as it was good result for the championship”, said Hamprecht.
Early on Sunday, Carrera Cup Asia Round 8 saw Hamprecht securing a third place finish but the German rising star was excluded due to a breach of technical regulations (driver weight).
Lady luck didn’t shine on Tanart Sathienthirakul too as the Thai driver was forced to stop due to sensor failure in the last lap when he was on his way to another point scoring result today.
Teammate Yuan Bo had to start from P19. Moving up eleven places in the 13-lap race, the Chinese driver finished P8.
The long weekend came to an end with the second ‘Invitational Race’ of 2017 with another visit to the podium for Team StarChase.
Hamprecht, who started from fourth in the grid, finished third on a thrilling finale in the professional class combined Carrera Cup Asia/Australia race.
Tanart had a race long battle for tenth; eventually he had to settle for P11. Team C&D Auto’s Yuan Bo crossed the line in 16th.
Team Director, Ingo Matter said, “We leave Sepang with mixed feelings after what turned out to be a difficult race weekend. We learnt from this and we will bounce back stronger in Singapore.”
Once the summer break is out of the way, it will be into the season highlight at Marina Bay Street Circuit (Singapore) on September 15-17.
